Giuseppe Zocchi (circle of), View of Piazza Santa Trinita in Florence

About the Item

Giuseppe Zocchi (circle of) Florence, 1717 - 1767 View of Piazza Santa Trinita in Florence oil on canvas, 30×50 cm Within frame totaling 42×62 cm The painting, in a good state of preservation, captures one of the best-known engravings by Giuseppe Zocchi, a painter, engraver and draftsman active mainly in Florence. Born into a family of modest origins, he entered the workshop of Ranieri del Pace, where he began to make a name for himself as an interior decorator. He came under the protection of Marquis Andrea Gerini and was able to travel to Venice, Milan, Bologna, and Rome, where he learned about new artistic trends and developed a curiosity about landscape and contemporary society. His most famous work is a series of 25 views of the city of Florence and 50 of the grand ducal villas and places around Florence, commissioned by Andrea Gerini and published beginning in 1744, which were immediately successful and widely circulated throughout Europe. His style drew on Venetian vedutism, with an ability to render limpid depictions of landscapes and architecture in general, with a remarkable attention to detail, which makes this series an invaluable document of eighteenth-century Florence. It is precisely from this work that our painting derives, a View of the Piazza di Santa Trinita in Florence, where what plays a key role, in addition to the buildings of the splendid Tuscan city rendered with great attention to detail, are the figures that are the protagonists of the canvas' foreground. Rendered with speed, as if to emphasize once again the idea of movement and dynamism that animates them, all the characters in the engraving are found. Their being slightly less detailed than the original etching suggests an attribution to a pupil of Zocchi, or more likely to an artist active within his studio. This work has not yet obtained a certificate of free export from Italy from the Cultural Heritage Superintendence. Questo documento certifica che l'opera non fa parte del patrimonio culturale italiano.
