In 1974 museum Fodor in amsterdam dedicated to his work. Quote from Georg Ruyter, from the catalog fodor 20: “In general, I work with two opposing elements, which together form a totality that is both static and dynamic. I call it concrete design, something that asserts itself and is based on the properties of the surface and the material to be used. Cobra Painting ERNST VIJLBRIEF Original Oil on Canvas, 1960s, Signed & Dated
Located in AMSTERDAM, NL
powerful work “Snake in wonderland” by Ernst Vijlbrief (1938-2010). The expressive brushstrokes are typical for the style of Vijlbrief, connecting him to CoBrA and the expressive action paintings of Karel Appel. This small work is a great example of the early style of Vijlbrief and a highly collectible piece. Signed in top corner and verso signed, dated and titled. Ernst Vijlbrief, born November 25th, 1934, in Utrecht studied at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam and at the Academia di Porta Romana in Florence (1956-1959). In the late fifties, after moving to Amsterdam in 1958, he painted in an expressive style, similar to CoBrA. In 1961 he took part in the large exhibition “Jongere Nederlandse schilders, beeldhouwers en architekten: Liga Nieuw Beelden” in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Next to his work as an artist, Vijlbrief was an engaged board member of several artist associations, like the Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars (Professional Association of Visual Artists). In 1973 he cofounded Bond van Beeldende Kunstarbeiders (BBKA) in Utrecht, with artist Bob Bonies. His work is held in collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Cobramuseum in Amstelveen, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and The Ferens Art Gallery UK. Vijlbrief died at the age of 76 in 2010. “Snake in Wonderland”, signed front and signed & dated verso DIMENSIONS h 45 cm w 45 cm d 2 cm PERIOD 1960s / 1964 PLACE OF ORIGIN The Netherlands PROVENANCE private collection, NL MATERIALS oil on canvas in modern frame CONDITION fair original and untouched condition, with craquelé and some minor paint loss due to its age. Minimalist Geometric Abstract Relief in Tonal Whites by Dutch Artist
Located in AMSTERDAM, NL
Expressive abstract relief in white by Dutch artist Henk van Putten (1936-2019) Van Putten called himself a constructivist in the tradition of Vladimir Tatlin, with whom he shared not only aesthetic principles but also social commitment. For example, almost everything he made in 3D is made up of several parts; glued, welded or screwed together. In his paintings, which he often made prior to the 3D version, he even painted the seams where they would appear in the later work. Van Putten’s work, although easily recognisable, shows a clear affinity with artists he admires such as André Volten, Gerrit Rietveld and more generally with ‘De Stijl’. Yet he made no contact with them; he felt much more like a kindred spirit of German artists, especially the ZERO movement whose members, like himself, were strongly involved in society. He befriends people like Egon Eppich and Hap Grieshaber...
