Especially this portrait is difficult to copy because of the complexity and unique expression of her face. The girl is looking over her shoulder with a slightly open mouth as if she might had said something or is about to say something. With this reproduction, Gieljan Horikx did a stunning job doing so. Rarely you see a reproduction like this on the market and of yet he only made one reproduction of this particular painting making it extra special. The reproduction of “The Girl with the Pearl Earring” (46x39 cm) is made the same size as the original painting by Johannes Vermeer. And just like Vermeer in his time, Gieljan painted this reproduction in the multiple-layer technique. Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer’s most famous painting. It is not a portrait, but a ‘tronie’ - a painting of an imaginary figure. Tronies depict a certain type or character; in this case a girl in exotic dress, wearing an oriental turban and an improbably large pearl in her ear. Gieljan spent two months researching and painting this reproduction. By visiting the museum in The Hague - the Mauritshuis - he frequently observed the original painting by Vermeer and studied the subtlety of the brushwork, use of color and light. Remarkably no line or visible shift in tone defines the profile of the left-hand side of the girl's nose. The bridge of the nose is depicted precisely with the color of the adjacent cheek. The lines of the right side of the nose and nostril are lost in shadow. For this reproduction only high quality oil paint and very fine portrait linen are used. As with the original by Vermeer, the oil gives it the quality to flow one color into the other like no other medium can. The blue turban in this reproduction is composed of a darker blue color as a ground layer and on top of that lighter shades of blue were painted over, giving the turban a rich color. Also in parts of the face of this reproduction you can see the ground color shining through the upper layer giving the face its skin like appearance. Just like the real one brush strokes are scarcely visible. This multiple-layer technique is highly time consuming because every layer has to dry for days before a subsequent layer can be painted over it. Gieljan doesn’t believe in rushing while he is painting but instead takes time and effort in making something truly perfect. The original painting by Vermeer is full of cracking, this reproduction is painted anew. The painting is in an unvarnished condition. About the painter Gieljan Horikx (1991) started his painting career recently as an artist who makes high quality oil paintings. Besides painting from his own inspiration he makes oil reproductions of paintings by the old masters. He focuses especially on portrait paintings and finds it very important to capture the likeness and spirit of the person he is depicting. At the moment he is in the process of making a reproduction of a self-portrait by Rembrandt with Beret and Turned-Up Collar (85x66 cm) made in 1659. As part of the Andrew W. Mellon Collection it has been in the National Gallery of Art - Washington D.C. - since 1937. Gieljan is also a classical pianist who completed his classical music education at the conservatoire of Rotterdam. He finds great similarities between classical music and classical painting in finding the right balance in tone, color and atmosphere.

Beautifully painted, probably in the 19th or early 20th centuries, this copy of the famed "Le Transport du Christ au Tombeau" painting by Titian (Tiziano) in the collection of the Louvre in Paris, was recently found in the attic of a Hudson Valley monastery. The Louvre original, considered an early painting by the master, dates to the same period as his famous "Pastoral Concert" and shows the strong influence of Gorgione. This scene depicts the collaborative efforts of Joseph of Arimathea, Saint John and Nicodemus as they moved Christ's body from the cross to his tomb, watched by the two grieving Marys -- his mother and Mary Magdalene. It is not known who painted this copy, though of course artists over the years have copied the great Master paintings...
