Essay
A brilliant interior scene typical of Verboeckhoven's idyllic and romantic ouevre, the present example is a large impeccably detailed interior with transcendent light pouring through unseen windows above to bathe the primary sheep and her lamb in a nearly ecclesiastical warm light. A chicken pecks and scratches around the barn floor with another solitary bird resting on a wooden roost leaned against the far wall. You can almost feel the silence and stillness of the scene. It remains housed in what is likely the original carved giltwood frame.
Condition:
Light surface craquelure throughout. A clean and vibrant surface sealed in traditional Dammar varnish. Under UV examination, touchups along the top edge from frame rubbing, pin prick specks of inpaint throughout, gray wall along the left side is overpainted. Overall stable and remaining in good condition. The giltwood frame is likely original and is a nice presentation, though with the typical surface history: cracks, rubbing through the gilding, minor chips and losses. Ready to hang.
