"Europa and the Bull", Bold Art Deco Depiction of Mythological Theme by Darcy

About the Item

One of the wildest and most free-spirited depictions of the Europa and the Bull legend we have seen, this painting by Georges Darcy shows Europa with a wild, flowing mane of hair, nude and fully in command of the powerful bull she is riding. The stark white and black of the painting are boldly contrasted with the warm pink background, catching and holding the eye of the viewer. Like many other artists in the 1920s and 30s, Darcy captures one of the most dynamic stories from Greek mythology, where Zeus takes the form of a bull and spirits Europa off to Crete. Darcy is known for his bucolic paintings decades earlier, so this late work is a major departure for the artist. The painting is gouache and watercolor; it is signed in the lower righthand corner. Dimensions include the matte and frame; the visible painting is 17.25 inches high by 23.5 inches wide.
