About the Item
A traditional antique watercolor on paper depicting a boat at sea by Edmund Darch Lewis. Signed on the bottom right and dated 1867. Edmund Darch Lewis (1835-1910) was an American landscape painter known for his prolific style and marine oils and watercolors. Lewis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a well-to-do family. He started training at age 15 with German-born Paul Weber of the Hudson River School. Began exhibiting at the age of nineteen, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and continued to do so until 1891. From a private collection. Dimensions: 26”h x 38.5”w x 1”d (framed). In good vintage condition consistent with age.

Edmund Darch Lewis
Edmund Darch Lewis was born in 1835 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and lived there throughout his life. Lewis was one of the most popular landscape painters of Philadelphia during the late 19th century. He studied with artist Paul Weber from 1850–55 and used watercolors to capture marine and river scenes along the Eastern Coast. He exhibited extensively during his career, including at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, National Academy of Design, Brooklyn Art Association, Boston Athenæum and Boston Art Club. Lewis’s paintings are found in museums, galleries, and private collections throughout the United States, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, United States Department of State, Bowdoin College, Worcester Art Museum, Samuel Merritt Hospital in Oakland, California and Bostonian Society. In Sailing Along the Coast, Darch uses gouache to bring to life the rugged coastline and the choppy ocean surf in this exquisitely painted marine scene.

According to the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition, ""Varley's landscapes are graceful and solemn in feeling, and simple and broad in treatment, being worked with a full brush and pure fresh transparent tints, usually without any admixture of body-colour. Though his works are rather mannered and conventional, they are well considered and excellent in composition. Some of his earlier water-colours, including his ""Views of the Thames,"" were painted upon the spot, and possess greater individuality than his later productions, which are mainly compositions of mountain and lake scenery, produced without direct reference to nature.""
