Early 20th Century French Original Painting by Post-Impressionist Brun-Sirdey
About the Item
A magnificent, original painting of Paris in the early 1900s. This colorful, post-impressionist gauche is signed by painter Brun-Sirdey in the lower left corner (see photo). It features a street view in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris.
Little is know of the painter, Brun-Sirdey. He was active in Paris in the early 20th century and he was a member of the artist association called "Société des Peintres du Paris Moderne". They organized several art exhibitions in Paris at the Grand Palais des Champs Elysées in 1905, 1907 and 1913 in which Brun-Sirdey also took part.
Very much in-line with the post-impressionist movement, he has used bold colors in this antique painting. The use of gauche gives this artwork a muted, mat-finish. The artwork has been put under glass and framed in a recycled, sold wood frame (see old label from a photograph on the back). The painting is surrounded by a discrete, cream colored mat.
The gouache is in overall good antique condition. The colors are still bright and show no signs of fading. The bottom left corner, where the signature can be found, shows traces of having been folded in the past. A section of yellow sky in the upper left corner also shows signs of wear and there is a small scratch on road (see photos). No trace of past humidity. The frame, the mat and the back are also in good condition.

IVAN SUMMERS, 1889-1964, was an important American Impressionist artist whose home was in Woodstock NY for most of his life, but his painting and teaching career included many extended stays on the east and west coasts, as well as the south, southwest and midwest.
Born in Illinois, he studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts for four years beginning in 1910, and won three awards in the St Louis Art Guild Exhibitions 1914-1919 plus a prize in the Art Students League, NYC, in 1916.
His summer studies in Woodstock began around 1913, and he was able to finance his early years through commissions for World War I officers' portraits and medical journal illustrations. By 1918 he was a member of the Salmagundi Club and moved to New Hope PA. He soon bought property in Woodstock, where he settled and married artist Theresa Jessel Jones in 1920. He became an instructor and by 1930-31 the Director at the ASL's Summer School at Woodstock, with winter visits to Florida and teaching positions also at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1925 and the Charleston SC...
