"Dante's Inferno, " Post-War Expressionist Painting in Vivid Red, Black and White
About the Item
A remarkable scene from Dante's Inferno with three nude male figures and a horse, all imbued in white, black and red the color of blood was painted by Emil Kosa, Jr. The central figure, who seems to be fainting from the rawness of the scene, is clutching a sheaf of wheat, to his left is a male figure whose head is downcast, and to his right there is a male figure with the head of strange beast. In the distance is an arched bridge, and the horse is reminiscent of De Chirico's work, so perhaps Kosa is giving this scene an Italian character. The artist was born in Paris, but came to California in the 1920s and stayed there for most of his career. He painted murals, portraits and plein-air landscapes, and he played a major role in Hollywood, in charge of special effects for 20th century Fox for decades. He won an Oscar for his work for "Cleopatra," starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in 1963. (Dimensions include frame.)
