About the Item

A portrait of the Countess of Rochester, Henrietta Boyle, by the skillful nineteenth century Florentine painter Vittorio Bianchini, in the manner of Sir Peter Lely, the court painter to Charles II. Bianchini specialized in copies of Old Master and other renowned works of art by artists such as Raphael, Reni, and Reynolds. The Countess of Rochester was born around 1646, daughter of Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork. She married Laurence Hyde, 1st Earl of Rochester, and she died in 1687. There are two other known portraits of the countess. There is a portrait by Sir Peter Lely himself, part of a group of portraits executed in the 1660's, known as the Windsor Beauties, because they hung in the queen's bedroom at Windsor, and remain, today, in the Royal Collection. The second is an eighteenth century miniature by Christian Friedrich Zincke, believed to be based on Lely's portrait. There are references to engravings of the Windsor Beauties, by Thomas Watson (1743-1781) and these are likely the means by which the countess image was made available to be re-interpreted in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by other artists. While the Bianchini portrait resembles most closely the Zincke portrait in terms of facial features, Bianchini is clearly very familiar with the body of work by Lely, though not with the original of this portrait. He is faithful to Lely's distinctive seventeenth century style of portraiture: dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, scale and setting, and the details of drapery, landscape and pose very closely resemble those of other Lely portraits.
