Clementine Hunter - "Wedding", c. 1960s

About the Item

Artist: Clementine Hunter (1886-1988) Medium: Oil Paint on Board Date: c. 1965 Movement/Style: Outsider Art Dimensions: 17.5" x 13.5" Additional Notes: This original Clementine Hunter painting was authenticated by Tom Whitehead. Hunter (1887-1988) was a self-taught Black outsider artist born in Louisiana who lived and worked on the Melrose Plantation, one of the largest estates built by and for free Blacks. She spent the first half of her life as a laborer, and never had the opportunity to learn how to read or write. Starting in the 1940s, she began painting what has been described as complex depictions of Black Southern life in the early 20th Century. Despite her earlier works selling for as little as 25 cents, she lived long enough to see her pieces exhibited in museums and being sold by renowned art dealers for thousands of dollars. After a lifetime of producing upwards of 5,000-10,000 paintings, in 1986 she was granted an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by Northwestern State University of Louisiana. AF - 301543 - 101824
