"Cavorting Nudes & Nymphs in Moonlight, " Surrealist Painting by Janschka

One of the most sensual and brilliant Art Deco paintings in the French manner that we have ever offered, this idyllic scene of Satyr and Nymph, lounging under a fruited tree with lush fields in the distance, was painted by Gheorghe Labin in 1932. Labin was one of Romania's avant-garde artists in the 1920s and 1930s, and clearly he trained in Paris, because the lush scene, brilliant palette, and confident brush strokes indicate an intimate familiarity with the leading painters associated with what we now call Art Deco. This painting was entered into the Salon Bucarest in 1932, in a period when Labin exhibited with Mattis Teutsch, the de facto leader of Romania's modern painters, together with Corneliu Baba...

Painted in soft, dreamlike colors and depicting a magical landscape of attenuated nude figures dominated by a painter and his muse, this extremely fine Surrealist work was painted by Arthur Ames in 1939. Here he used egg tempera on gesso-finished board -- a favorite medium among painters such as Paul Cadmus, Jared French and others in the 1930s, 40s and 50s -- to create a highly detailed view of an imagined landscape. Behind the central couple and the painting on its easel, there is a retreating woman in a flowing, Classical robe, and in the far distance a couple embracing on a mountain top. Ames was born in the Midwest but studied on the West Coast and became a California artist through and through; he participated in the Federal Art Project, and worked with his fiancée, Jean Goodwin...

This brilliant Surrealist composition, with the stylization and exaggerated plant forms of Art Deco, was painted by Jan Matulka in 1944. Both Surrealism and "Moderne" decorative arts thrived in the 1940s, and here the artist draws from both styles. Matulka was born in Prague and came to America as a young man, and trained here and in Paris, where he became exposed to Cubism. He exhibited in New York, created illustrations for New Masses which advanced the interest of American workers...
