British School Landscape Painting of Cows at Stream by Farm, 19th Century

About the Item

This is a gorgeous painting from the early half of the nineteenth century, painted almost certainly in Britain and quite skillfully. The scene is very busy and full of life, the bright blue sky speckled with only a handful of clouds over a wooded homestead situated comfortably beside a stream. A small herd of cattle are drinking from the trickling waters as the farmer keeps a watchful eye from the distant background, his cottage just a few steps away. Rough planks are employed between trees as a makeshift fence. The work is unsigned and was probably cleaned in the last fifty years or so, though it should undergo restoration before being properly enjoyed. The painting is very beautiful and positively striking in it's detail and vivid colors. The cows are romanticized, each given almost a human dimension in the face with eyes that appear wise and thoughtful distinct in the brown-and-white cow bottom-center, his companion rather bashful in demeanor in stark contrast to the somewhat angry looking steer trampling through the waters just above them. The dark areas of the scene are likewise full of detail, somewhat hidden by the varnish but still clearly well developed in the close up images. It is a very nice selection for anyone passionate about scenes with Cows, as this scene is full of the nostalgia we cherish in images of rustic countrysides and nineteenth century rural life. Measurements: 28 13/16" W x 29 1/2" H [framed]; 25 3/4" W x 26 5/8" H [canvas] Condition Report: A beautiful piece in "as-is" condition. Original lining and stretchers with numerous patches verso. Frame is contemporary with light wear. Patched "L" tear mid-upper quad (sky, 3/4" x 1/2"); some tiny scattered paint losses. Stretcher impressions along sides. Light craquelure and surface grime. Under UV, the lower half examination is obscured by a later varnish: repaired tear low-left quad; inpainting at stream edge by brown cow and to tree on right; low-right quad with spots of touch up, repaired hole by the black & white cow.
