"Bringer of Light, " Large, Art Deco Nocturnal Triptych with Nude Figures
About the Item
Mystical and beautiful, this three-part watercolor painting depicts a central nude male figure holding a faceted crystal emanating shafts of light, surrounded by clusters of other nude figures, some attracted to the light and some repelled. Serving as a study or cartoon for a large mural, perhaps never executed, there is something lovely and ethereal about this scene, and given its gentle nature, it may be a veiled criticism of the Nazi regime at the time. Early in his career, Eduard Stella was a member of the Vienna Secession, and later was known for his theatre sets and designs, working at the Josefstädter Theatre, the Neue Wiener Bühne, and the Volks theatre, among others. Each element of the triptych has its own label signed by the artist, and one of the three is monogrammed on the verso.
