About the Item

American Realist "The Card Players" oil painting on stretched canvas by Ralph Taylor (1896-1978).. Signed, Ralph Taylor, upper left corner. Taylor's use of brush stroke and color depicts a busy and decadent game room. Most of the background figures have mask like features. All the great vices of gambling, smoking and drinking are on display as a multitude of women revel in the wild atmosphere. The period dress and millinery dates circa 1920-30. Unframed. Good Overall condition with minor cosmetic wear and blemishes. No major surface paint loss, rips, tears or restorations. A few wood stretcher keys are missing. The upper margin is stapled and not tacked like the other edges. The canvas measures approximately 20" high x 24" wide x 1" deep. Ask Art Bio: Ralph Taylor was a painter, printmaker and teacher. He was born in Russia and had addresses in Philadelphia, PA. He studied at the Graphic Sketch Club; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art with Henry Mc Carter; also in Italy, France and England. He was a member of the Philadelphia Art Alliance; Philadelphia Print Club; Philadelphia Graphic Sketch Club; and Alliance of American Artists. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy Annual from 1921-1929, 1949; PAFA (Mary Butler Memorial Prize for Concert, 1954); Corcoran Gallery Biennial, 1923; Philadelphia Art Club, 1928; Bower Gallery, N.Y., 1930 (solo); Woodmere Art Gallery; and many others. He won the Da Vinci Gold Medal in 1959 for City at Night, and the Philadelphia Art Alliance award in 1963 for Animated Conversation. His work is in the Fleisher Art Memorial; La France Art Institute; PAFA; Graphic Sketch Club. His preferred media was oil.
