Abstract 20th Century School Oil Painting, Rudolf Forst Entitled “Green Fields"

About the Item

The work done circa mid-late 1960s is subtle in execution but vivid and almost wet with moment and shading. The colors are not cold and mod but warm and inviting creating a deeply hypnotic aspect. Being abstract the work is actually hang-able in a vertical or horizontal format. We have chosen to show it vertically heightening the sense of the sensual moment. The painter has a very deep understanding of the delicate use of washes throughout the negative areas and an almost complete lack of hard edges or linear definition create a sense of constant blending moment. The reference to green fields in the title seems very appropriate as dappled sunlight moving over completely abstracted green grasses and trees seem unnaturally cognoscente of its own existence. The work is in its own period non- frame. The knife-edge being almost invisible and only as a notation to the end of the canvas. We have recently learned that the artist is more widely known for his contributions to the field of music but did indeed express his talents in painting as well.. the following is a short bio that was attached to a musical score of his: "Rudolf Forst (1900-1973) Rudolf Forst was born in New York City in 1900. He began his musical education at the age of eight. He received all his instruction in New York City, studying piano, violin and theory under various teachers. He taught himself composition. At Columbia University he did post-graduate work with Daniel Gregory Mason. For three years he taught violin at the New York College of Music and was musical director of radio station WLWL. He was also editor of Edition Musicus. Erno Rapee engaged him as musical consultant in charge of the sound system at Radio City Music Hall as well for the coast-to-coast radio program “Music Hall of the Air” which was conducted by such guests as Stokowski, Thomas Beecham, and featured famous soloists. This program received a special award for its Mahler Cycle, a presentation of all the Mahler Symphonies. In 1936, Rudolf Forst received an award from the Music Guild of the National Broadcasting Company for a string quartet. The Gordon Quartet, for whom “Music Mountain” in Connecticut was established, performed the work. He assisted Dorothy Lawton in setting up the first Music Library for the New York Public Library. Alfred Wallenstein frequently conducted his works and he presented the first performance of Forst’s Cello Concerto, with George Neikrug as soloist. Other American orchestras have performed his works. His “Symphonia Brevis,” “Symphonietta for Strings,” and “Sonata da Camera” were broadcast over NBC and WOR. A trio for flute, viola, and harp, dedicated to Mrs. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge was performed for her by Lambros Callimahos, Egon Kenton, and Lucile Lawrence. Forst was an interesting combination of painter as well as composer. His paintings have received awards and been shown throughout the United States and Europe. He is represented in numerous private collections and in the permanent collection of the Safad Museum in Israel. Among his orchestra scores and chamber music works is a one act opera “Riders to the Sea,” art songs, solo works for piano, harp, and choral works."
