About the Item

Henri Dreyfus-Lemaître (1859 - 1946) was a French artist born in Amiens associated with the post-impressionist movement. His workshop at Frépillon, bordering Auvers-sur-Oise, allowed him to exchange with the great masters of the City. Counting among his friends Émile Bernard, Émile Schuffeneker, Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin during his period in Pont-Aven, he became a member of the Salon d'Automne de Paris, and took part in the salon des Indépendants. His particular use of pointillism, a theory founded by Georges Seurat, reveals a perfect mastery of the juxtaposition of complementary colors, and makes him a painter unfairly little known. Close to the divisionist painters, notably Maximilien Luce or Lucien Pissarro, he is also very impregnated with Impressionist theories, and very often choosing naturalistic subjects, he tried to work on the outdoor motif.

This 19th century impressionist painting was crafted in France, circa 1890. Set in a carved giltwood frame, the artwork painted on canvas, illustrates a picturesque, countryside landscape scene with people, chickens, a village and its road in the foreground. The oil on canvas is signed on the back in the lower left corner, Eugene Galien-Laloue (see last picture). We thank Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this work, which appears in his archives of the artist.
Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) was a French artist of French-Italian parents. He was a popularizer of landscape and street scenes, usually those illustrating autumn or winter settings. His paintings of the early 1900s accurately represent the era in which he lived: a happy, bustling Paris during la Belle Époque. His paintings regularly include horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and its first omnibuses. Galien-Laloue's works are valued not only for their contribution to 20th century art, but for the actual historical content which they document. His work can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Louvier, Musée des Beaux-Arts, La Rochelle, Mulhouse, France.

This beautiful antique oil on board painting was created in France circa 1830. Set inside its original gold leaf frame, the painting shows a humble peasant mother feeding breakfast to her two children after saying grace in the manner of Chardin. The interior of the home is simple, austere and calm. The painting is in excellent condition, commensurate with age and use with wonderful colors. The composition here is meticulous, and the stability created by the triangular structure of the three figures also adds to the tranquility and balance of the scene.
