19th century, Carl Haag (1820 -1915) Church interior Oil on canvas, 68.7 x 50 cm - with frame 90, 2 x 71.3 cm Signed lower right “C. Haag " This painting depicts a faithful depiction of what Munich Cathedral (Frauenkirche) was like, at least before its destruction during the 1944 Allied bombing raids. Inside you can see the statues of Erasmus Grasser and Ignaz Pollack, depicting the Apostles and Prophets (now lost) and the monument of Emperor Louis the Bavaro, rebuilt after the war. As attested by the signature, this painting was made by the German-born painter Carl Haag (1820-1915); executed before 1847 when he moved to England. Born in Bavaria, Carl Haag was apprenticed to an uncle, a porcelain painter in Nuremberg, and studied at a local drawing school. His earliest works were drawings of buildings in Nuremberg, as well as portraits and portrait miniatures, from which he earned a modest living. In 1847 he visited England to learn more about the English watercolor technique, studying at the Royal Academy Schools. It was during this period that a severe burn to the right hand led to the adoption of a more loose and spontaneous watercolor technique. (Prescott Hewett, the surgeon who operated on Haag's hand, became the artist's first major patron, and introduced the artist to the future Lord Penrhyn, who commissioned him a series of Italian views.) In 1852, while drawing in Tyrol, Haag met Charles, Prince of Leiningen, who was Queen Victoria's half-brother, and the following year he was invited to Balmoral by the Queen herself. Victoria commissioned a series of works from Haag, most notably two landscapes from Morning in the Highlands and Evening at Balmoral, and also produced portraits of members of the Royal House; these works are all still in the Royal Collection and are housed in the Royal Library of Windsor Castle. Patronage of the royal family established Haag's reputation, and he was elected a full member of the Old Water-Color Society in 1855. Between 1854 and 1857 Haag traveled extensively in Europe, visiting Italy, Germany, Montenegro. and Dalmatia. In late 1857, Haag decided to travel to Egypt and the Near East, where he remained for two years producing drawings and sketches of the landscapes and Bedouins he encountered in the desert. In April Haag visited Jerusalem, where he stayed for about three months. There, at the special request of Queen Victoria, the Sultan granted the artist permission to paint the interior of the Dome of the Rock mosque; he was the first artist to have access to this sacred place. Haag has held two studios, one in England and the other in Germany, which gives some insight into his successful career of him. His studio in Hampstead was decorated in a Middle Eastern style, with objects collected during his travels, while his home and studio in the Rhenish town of Oberwesel were in a tower (known as the Rote Thürm, or Red Tower) overlooking on the river. It was here that, at the age of eighty-three, Haag retired.
