About the Item

Late 18th century neoclassical Italian oil painting of a woman playing piano. Inscribed on the reverse Teresa Manfredi, likely the daughter of the famous Lucca violinist and composer, Filippo Manfredi. Signed on the reverse Paolo de Giusti Di Lucca, dated 1798. Also inscribed on the stretcher the names Filippo Mafredi and Boccherini. The two musicians were friends and fellow players as shown in this quote from Luigi Boccherini: "In the 1760s, I was a member of a traveling quartetto, and in 1767 we met Filippo Manfredi, an Italian violinista, who joined the group. Manfredi and I later separated from the quartetto and formed a traveling duetto. We traveled around Paris and Italy, playing music and aiding each other in composing, and eventually we were stationed in Madrid, under the employ of the Spanish royal family as court composers. We shared each others artistic abilities and insights to reach a very high point in both of our careers, and he was a ottimo amico for many years." Filippo Manfredi, (b Lucca, March 8, 1731; d Lucca, July 12, 1777). Italian violinist and composer. He came from a musical family. His father Giovanni Carlo and brother Pietro Luigi were Horn players, while another brother, Vincenzo Ferrerio, was a flautist. All were members of the Cappella di Palazzo, the most prestigious musical institution in 18th century Lucca. He studied the violin in Genoa with Domenico Ferrari (1742) and in Livorno with Pietro Nardini (1745–1746). He was a supernumerary violinist in the Cappella Palatina and was appointed first violinist in 1758. His appearances with this Lucca orchestra alternated with busy musical activity in cities such as Siena, Pisa, Livorno, Florence and Venice, but he was frequently in Genoa, where he played in theatres, served as chief instrumentalist for religious functions and taught.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The painting is in very good condition. The neoclassical frame, probably original, has a beautiful acanthus leaf border. Restored at some point with gold paint, the original gilding appears to be intact underneath.
