18th Century French Port Scene Oil Painting from Provence
About the Item
Sharing similarities of a mid-17th-century Italian capriccio painting, this French oil painting from Provence depicts fantastical architecture set amongst the more realistic setting of a bustling port. This unsigned painting from the 1700s is after Claude-Joseph Vernet, the 18th-century French painter who was known for his coastal scenes that were dotted with ancient architecture.
Numerous citizens (including a black dog), engaging in activities ranging from fishing to swimming, are enjoying the blue sky, despite the large gray cloud that can be seen in the distance. There are quite a few rowboats on the water, with two massive freighters off the rocky shore in the foreground, which has an accumulation of green moss with some sparse grass coverage. Impressive stone structures can be seen rising from the waters, in front of the distant shore that features a large aqueduct topped by a pergola. A mountain range can be seen even further in the distance, behind additional architecture that lines the utmost coast. The painting is surrounded by a giltwood frame and would make a wonderful wall-mounted piece of art for just about any room of the house.

View AllLarge 18th Century French Oil on Canvas Painting Depicting a Hunt Scene
Located in Dallas, TX
This large (110 inches high) oil on canvas painting depicts a successful hunter, with his felled game displayed near his retriever dogs. Our hunter is leaning against a stone pedestal, clad in blue coat and pants with his rifle beneath his right hand. The man is wearing a gold cap with red fabric attached to it and has a sword on his left hip. Three retriever dogs stand to the hunter’s left, while a fourth sits in front of him (the man appears to be motioning to this dog with his left hand).
An orange terra cotta vase adorned with spiral fluting sits on top of a molded plinth at the top of the pedestal. Ivy has begun to wrap around the vase, which also is festooned with green drapery. On a ledge at the base of the pedestal is the felled game: a rabbit and three birds. The hunting display is surrounded by numerous trees and shrubbery. Mountains and a lake can be seen in the background, beneath a blue sky with pink and orange clouds and birds flying.
Based on the size and vertical orientation, the scene was most likely part of a French boiserie room...

Pair of Large 18th Century French Boiserie Overdoor Paintings
Located in Dallas, TX
Once installed architecturally in a chateau in Normandy, France, this large pair of overdoors was painted in the 1700s and executed in a technique known as verdaille. Verdaille utilizes various shades of green to achieve a mesmerizing monochromatic effect. This technique’s rich history traces back to the 12th century when it was initially employed to create stained glass for Cistercian monasteries, where colorful art was prohibited, making these overdoors not only aesthetically captivating but also a piece of living art history. Interestingly, there is a hand-written transport note on the back of one of the overdoors (see detail photo) that mentions the paintings were to be shipped to a Madame DeFrance in Paris, at the rue St. Honore corner of la rue Dufour (freight pre-paid).
These exquisite pieces are encompassed by wood frames adorned with lavish foliate carvings, beautifully painted in a soothing French gray hue. Each overdoor encapsulates a unique musical scene that transports you to the heart of 18th-century Europe. In the first painting, a man plays the uilleann pipe, a unique instrument with a bellow-driven mechanism that distinguishes it from a bagpipe. The musician has quite an audience, as two women, one cradling a sheep, and four more sheep next to a dog have gathered nearby. In the second painting, witness a captivating moment of courtship as a gentleman kneels before a woman with a tambourine in her hands. He presents a long woodwind instrument, possibly a carnyx, while a faithful dog rests nearby amidst a backdrop of gardening tools. These stunning French verdaille overdoors were once part of a themed boiserie room (most likely green in color and centered around music). They can once again be used to create a theme above a pair of interior doors or they can be hung as a unique set of artwork.

18th Century Walnut Wood Crossbow Commode from Provence, France
Located in Dallas, TX
In French, arbalete means “crossbow” and is typically used to describe the shape of furniture when the frontage has been carved in a sinuous manner. When the profile is viewed from above, it resembles the European Medieval crossbow. In the case of this walnut commode from Provence, the form is double arbalete.
Two iron swag handles are affixed to each of the three stacked drawers by parted shell mounts. In between the pulls is a sinuous plate that surrounds a keyhole. Each drawer maintains the arbalete structure created by the thinly molded top. The apron is highly shaped, with many small arbaletes strung together. In the center is a gadrooned leaf and floret medallion surrounded by volute scrolls.
The sides are straight but consist of recessed rectangular panels with asymmetrical tops...
