"Tea and Smoke in the Bath, " Important Scene in Moroccan Hammam by Azema

About the Item

This classic and important drawing by Jacques Azéma depicts two Moroccan male youth in the hammam or bath house, relaxing in the nude and imbibing in tea and a pipe. Azéma was a French artist who become fascinated with Morocco and its people, and spent most of his artistic life there. He was especially interested in the nation's young men, and depicted them again and again as they sat in the hammams or courtyards of Marrakech, often drinking tea or smoking a pipe. He settled there in 1930, teaching for years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, and working in the medina. As M-F Giacolette and C. Gonzáles-Aller noted, "“His small-format paintings are like jewels that reveal a dreamlike representation of Morocco, a landscape of the unconscious whose pictorial language is closer to that of a true Surrealist inspired by Giorgio de Chirico or Pierre Puvis de Chavannes." An important exhibition of Azéma's work was recently organized by Musée YVES SAINT LAURENT Marrakech. The drawing is ink on paper; the artist's monogram is in the lower-right corner. (Dimensions include matte and frame; visible drawing is 7 inches square.).
