"Standing Male Nude, " Extraordinary Drawing for Boxer Sculptures by Cecil Howard

About the Item

Exquisitely drawn in pencil and a feather, light ink wash, creating a pale, ghostly image that is refined and haunting, this full length male nude was accomplished by Cecil de Blaquiere Howard, the extraordinarily accomplished Canadian-American-French sculptor. In 2017, Sotheby's in London sold a magnificent collection of Howard's sculpture, including a series of bronzes and plaster sculptures from the 1930s, featuring nude male figures, boxers and wrestlers, and it's clear that this drawing was made in connection to this series of sculptures. Howard was born in Canada and grew up in the United States, but he spent much of his productive years in Paris. He exhibited in the famous Armory Show of 1913 in New York City, and exhibited widely in France and the United States for the next several decades. Howard exhibited a male nude entitled "American Youth" at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1943, winning him the George D. Widener Memorial Gold Medal, and after serving in the war, he won the Legion of Honour from the French government. Though he was, like John Singer Sargent, a citizen of the world as much as America itself, he was elected President of the National Sculpture Society in the 1940s. The medium is graphite and ink wash on heavy paper mounted on artist board incised with a border by the artist.

"Down for the Count, " Extraordinary, Rare Bronze w/ Nude Male Boxers by Howard
Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of the most celebrated figural sculptures of the 20th century, and one of the finest depictions of the male figure from the 1920s and 30s, this extremely rare bronze by Cecil de Blaquiere Howard depicts two boxers, one triumphant and one defeated, in the heat of the match. Each of the two nudes is beautifully captured in a scene that is compact and complex, with the standing figure stepping over and around the fallen figure below. The sculpture is depicting a dramatic moment in the boxing ring, but it is also presenting two male figures at their peak of physical perfection. Howard was born in Canada, brought up in America, and trained under sculptors such as James Fraser...
