Drawing charcoal "Figure de cendre" Paul de Pignol, 2016
About the Item
Born in Toulouse in 1965, Paul de Pignol studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the painting studio of Pierre Carron. He lives and works between Paris and Montigny-sur-Loing.
He created his first sculpture “Girl with a Balloon” in 1989, inspired by Lucas Cranach’s Venus. Little by little, sculpture imposes itself in his work. Drawing took on particular importance from 2010, when he decided to devote a specific workshop to it in Paris. His studio in Montigny-sur-Loing becomes his sculpture space. From then on, a relationship becomes evident between these two disciplines.
His drawings reveal sensations experienced in the forest; his work is embodied by the different passages, additions, then deletions of material. The more material he adds, the more light sources emerge in his drawings of human figures and landscapes. The charcoal touches suggest organic particles, cells. The body seems to dissolve in space.
Paul de Pignol activates both his memory and his sense of observation of the forms of nature. The charcoal settles on the page like alluvium.
