17th Century Sanguine Drawing of an Arm and Hand

About the Item

This fine small drawing in sanguine on paper is from the collection of Phillips Hathaway. Retired investment banker, former Sothebys expert and once a World War II pilot. Known for his philanthropic interests as well as his lovely home he was listed many times on the best dressed lists of his day. The piece shown is a fine example of his collecting passions. The work is a preparatory sketch and has a further drawing on the verso but is not attributed to any artist. The water mark is Latin but somewhat indistinct. Attached to the work is a notation of its purchase from Morelock Antiques and described as Dutch, circa 1650-1700. The work is small but very well drawn with great sensitivity to anatomy and proportion. Framed in a good gold leaf frame the work is further enhanced by a good delicate French matte creating a fine collector drawing. The image is 8.25 by 6.75.
