A Large and Fine 19th Century Italian Pietra Dura Still-Life Framed Panel
About the Item
A Large and Fine Quality 19th Century Italian Pietra Dura Still-Life Framed Panel. The panel is an inlaid pietra dura composition set within a giltwood frame. It features a polished black stone background with an arrangement of classical vessels and objects on a simulated stone shelf. The inlays are composed of various hardstones, including lapis lazuli, alabaster, agate, malachite, and other semi-precious materials. The vessels depicted include a green-patinated bronze oil lamp, an alabaster and agate vase with a flared rim, two red and orange agate amphorae with black-figure decoration, a blue lapis lazuli ewer with a gold-colored grapevine motif and a curved handle with an animal head terminal, a small alabaster and brown veined jug, and a chalice-style dish holding a gold pocket watch with a green malachite ribbon.
Each object is rendered with precisely hand-carved and hand-polished inlays, arranged to create detailed forms. The amphorae have twin handles and broad footed bases, while the ewer has a pronounced spout and decorative handle. The alabaster and agate vase is supported by a stepped pedestal foot, and the chalice-style dish stands on a turned stem and circular base. A small brown cylindrical object rests in the foreground. The inlaid elements are fitted together seamlessly, with fine detailing in the stone selection and placement to define contours and decorative motifs.
Pietra dura is a stone inlay technique that involves cutting and fitting polished hardstones into a stone or slate base to create decorative compositions. Each piece of stone is selected for its color and veining, then cut using saws, abrasives, and hand tools to achieve precise shapes. The inlaid stones are carefully arranged and set into a recessed surface, ensuring a tight fit. Once assembled, the panel is polished to a smooth, uniform finish, highlighting the contrast between the various hardstones and the background.
