Heinrich Siepmann 1986 Collage and Gouache on paper

About the Item

Heinrich Siepmann (1904-2002 Mülheim) Collage, paper and gouache on cardboard, signed and dated by hand, created 1986 Dimensions: 45 x 48.5 cm Heinrich Siepmann belonged to the second generation of constructivists in Germany and made an important contribution to the breakthrough and development of the artistic avant-garde in the post-war period. Heinrich Siepmann - From representational art through the turmoil of war to abstraction Heinrich Siepmann was born in Mühlheim an der Ruhr. Geographically, he never got far beyond his origins, but artistically all the more so: from 1925 to 1927, he attended the Folkwangschule in Essen and studied under Joseph Enseling, Karl Kriete and Josef Urbach. In 1928, immediately after completing his training, he began working as a freelance painter. When he was called up for military service in 1941 and had to fight in the Second World War, he sought a balance in art even during these difficult years, practising still life and landscape painting and copying the old masters at every opportunity in order to refine his own technique. Although the figurative still dominated Siepmann's art at this time, the artist's great skill for the clear, almost strict construction of a picture is already clearly visible. After the war, when all forms around him had been destroyed and everything familiar had been shattered, Heinrich Siepmann turned to abstraction, seeking new paths because the old ones had proved inadequate. With strict forms to a perfect order of the pictorial structure Together with renowned colleagues such as Gustav Deppe, Thomas Grochowiak, Ernst Hermanns, Emil Schumacher and Hans Werdehausen, Heinrich Siepmann founded the artists' group junger westen, which set itself the goal of restoring the connection to modernism lost under the National Socialist dictatorship. Heinrich Siepmann stood out in the group - due to his clear constructivist approach, his explicit commitment to strict form and his age. He therefore often felt isolated. In 1962, junge westen disbanded and Siepmann continued to concentrate on non-objective construction, in which he found his very own form of expression. As a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund, Heinrich Siepmann was represented in 36 exhibitions between 1953 and 1996. He himself saw a combinatorial order in his artistic goal, reduced his formal language to fundamental elements and thus achieved a particular structuredness of expression. The nature of the pictorial structure always interested the artist far more than the actual representation. Keen artistic awareness well into old age Heinrich Siepmann, who always remained open to new ideas throughout his artistic career, achieved the feat of repeatedly adding a lyrical accent to his austere pictorial architecture. This unique ability to arouse empathy in the viewer through geometric abstraction is what sets him apart. The artist stood in front of his canvas well into old age and gave his thoughts and ideas artistic form, arranging space, surface and color into a carefully thought-out whole. Heinrich Siepmann received prizes and awards for his work, including the Grand Prix of the Seoul Biennale in 1981, the Ring of Honor of the city of Mühlheim and the Ida Gerhardi Prize of the Sparkasse Lüdenscheid. Heinrich Siepmann died on December 16, 2002 in Mühlheim an der Ruhr, his birthplace and hometown.

Georg Karl Pfahler was born on October 8, 1926 in Emetzheim, Bavaria. He spent his childhood and youth on his parents' farm, far away from any art. Nevertheless, he loved painting and drawing from an early age and cultivated it intensively as a childhood pastime. However, Georg Karl Pfahler only received the impetus to study art in 1948 when he met students from the Nuremberg Art Academy and accepted their invitation. His parents, good but simple country folk, had no interest in their son's newly awakened passion, and the young man was also met with incomprehension in his home village. However, Georg Karl Pfahler did not let this put him off, but attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg for two years, where he came into contact with original art for the first time and became acquainted with the works of Marc Chagall and Paul Klee. After two semesters, he moved to Stuttgart to study under Willi Baumeister, Gerhard...
