A Long 17th Century Carved Oak Baluster Leg Table from Flanders

About the Item

At over nine feet long, this sumptuous oak baluster leg table was hand-carved with an H-stretcher in Flanders, circa 1680. Long tables such as these were known as table de communauté and were designed to accommodate as many seats as possible. Religious institutions such as convents and monasteries often had elaborately carved tables spread throughout their dining hall. Notice the highly carved apron, which is adorned with a repeating pattern of foliate scrolls on top of a textured background. Each corner of the apron has a rectangular block attached by round dowels with a turned baluster leg on block feet beneath the joinery. In comparison to the top, the legs are inset toward the center of the table, allowing for more leg room. The top is comprised of two long planks surrounded by three and a half inch wide surrounding beams. The table has an exceptionally rich patina and the old block repairs on the top give added character. Today, a table of this length, style, age and beauty will certainly be a focal point in any interior.

17th Century Spanish Walnut Wood Table with Single Plank Top
Located in Dallas, TX
A beautifully crafted wooden table from Spain, the walnut was hand-carved at the end of the Renaissance (in the 1600’s). As is the case with most Spanish Renaissance tables, the 1 ½” thick single plank top rests upon tightly turned legs. The edges of the top do not have molding or carvings but receive added character from the large dovetail grooves that were used to construct the table. This table has framing beneath the top plank which houses three horizontally aligned drawers. Each drawer façade has an iron escutcheon in the shape of shield with two engrailed top edges. The keyplate is set within a foliate margent that is surrounded by several layers of molding. Identical carvings and iron plates can be seen on the opposite side of the table, which has faux drawer fronts. Beneath the belt are four turned legs connected by an H-stretcher. Our 17th century Spanish walnut table...

Large and Richly Carved 17th Century Walnut and Oak Trunk from Spain
Located in Dallas, TX
A beautiful and robust Spanish trunk, the carvings on the front façade are large and vibrant, accented by a deep brown patina. The trunk was hand-carved in the 1600s by a master craftsman, using both oak and walnut woods. Large dovetail joineries, visible on the sides, add character to the trunk, without taking away from the magnificent carvings. Two large, pierced iron straps support the massive trunk lid, which is embellished with several thin moldings. Both sides have an ovate handle affixed by a pierced floral mount, above an arbalete apron. The sinuosity continues on the front apron, but in more dramatic fashion, with a series of counter curves. Above the apron is a raised area (also seen on the sides) adorned with a winged angel mascaron inside of a shaped console, flanked by a large rosette atop a vine that is surrounded by a foliate border. A similar foliate carving can be seen on the recessed section of the façade, encircling another well-carved cartouche. The upper scene consists of a heart surmounting flowering leaves (beneath a shaped escutcheon), flanked by a pair of niches filled with sunbursts over flowering vines, which are in turn flanked by larger sunbursts personified with a mascaron center. All four sunbursts are incorporated with a cross, which, when depicted with the heart, symbolizes “love for all mankind”. Our richly carved Spanish trunk...
