Japanese Wabi Sabi Antique Wooden Low Table/1800-1920/Sofa Table
About the Item
This is a low table made from a part of a rare wooden ship “Kitamae-bune” obtained in Kanazawa, Hokuriku region. Kitamae-bune was an important trading ship that connected northern and western Japan from the Edo period to the Meiji period, and was used by merchants to transport goods. Kanazawa was included in the route and may have been available in this area.
The table, made of wood that was part of this route, is truly a gem with the weight and style of history.
The tabletop is made of multiple boards joined together with iron fittings. Through years of use and the forces of nature, the wood has withered and the soft parts have been scraped away, leaving only the hard parts. This creates a cool atmosphere in which the fineness and roughness of the wood grain are in perfect harmony, as if embodying the aesthetics of “wabi-sabi” and “yugen”. The tip is fastened with iron fittings and has a stately appearance as it is, but please be careful when handling it, as the fittings will bend if moved strongly.
The table base is made from an old, huge Japanese plane cut from oak wood. This item is also rare, with its deep color and robust construction. Tables with such austere and historical background are hard to find.
As such, this low table will add character and warmth to any interior space, and will add even more charm to your room. It blends perfectly with both simple contemporary rooms and Japanese tastes. We hope you will enjoy this one-of-a-kind item created by the power of nature.
Weight: 12.75 kg
Please note that some fine wood fragments may appear during shipping. Please understand this in advance.
"Caution"
As mentioned earlier, the edge of the tabletop is only secured by two metal fittings, so if you move only the edge, the tabletop will move up and down slightly. (There is a video to explain this.)
Therefore, please arrange the table base and tabletop in the direction shown in the photo.
This will keep the tabletop stable and prevent it from moving up and down.
