Pair of Chinese Melon Stone Drum Tables
About the Item
Drum-form stools such as these were traditionally used in gardens and outdoor pavilions where upper class scholars read, wrote, gathered for discussion and, in general, developed their inner sensibilities. This contemporary example is carved from solid limestone with a ribbed texture suggestive of a squash or melon, traditional symbols of longevity and perpetuity. The drums swell with gently tapered sides and a flattened top bordered by a rounded lip. Anchoring surroundings with the permanence of stone furniture, this pair of limestone drums are ideal indoors or out as a stool, side table or garden seat.
