English William & Mary Period Walnut Oyster Veneered Glove Box on Later Stand
About the Item
An English William and Mary period inlaid walnut oyster veneered glove box of typical form, the top opening to reveal a later fabric lined surface. Oyster veneer gets its name from the shape of the oyster shell. The veneer is created by using thin slices of wood branches or roots cut in cross-sections. The resulting circular or oval pieces of veneer, which are laid side by side, produce highly decorative patterns. This piece has a lovely rich color and is in overall very good condition. The glove box was made in the late 17th century; the stand is of later date. A useful and very handsome piece of furniture that is over 300 years old!
