About the Item

Elegantly crafted Mid-Century Modern coffee or side table designed by Arti for Belarti, Belgium in the 1960s. This cocktail table features an eye-catching ceramic tiles top using square warm gray tiles contrasted with a ceramic glaze creating an abstract design with assorted bright shades of blue, orange, red, black, and white. Framing and legs are chromed metal and black lacquered finish metal. The artist's signature is on one corner of the piece. Measurements: 42.75 in. wide (108.5 cm) x 18.32 in. deep (46.5 cm) x 15.75 in. high (40 cm). (Decoration elements not included in this sale). About: Who was Belarti? It is still not completely clear! Although many sellers confidently state that the tiles were created by a Belgian artist named Juliette Belarti or Julien Belarti, it appears that there is no such person. The name is a short anagram for " BELgian ARTIst" and was created by Julien de Covemaeker (1927 - 2008), a ceramist who had a ceramics and furniture workshop in Ostend, Belgium. First of all, there are several signatures for fairly similar production. Belarti is found in lowercase or uppercase (Belarti or BELARTI). Then because different spellings seem to have been used, it is not improbable that several people or artists signed with this name. Sometimes Belarti turns more or less into "Bel Arti" or simply "Arti." Besides, some pieces are signed "J. Belarti" and others "Belarti" alone or also "J. F. Belarti." Also, productions signed by J. D'asti, Adri, or De Nisco have many similarities with the creations signed by Belarti. Finally, adding to the confusion, there are tables in Perignem in Belgium with the same structure, but whose ceramics are signed by Yves Rhayé. However, many experts think Belarti is likely a generic name used by several artists for a typical ceramic production of the 1960s. Thanks to Spacevintageretroblogspot, some interesting information was found on a page of the Belarti catalog from 1968. It is explained that Belarti was a limited liability company created in May 1968 in Mechelen, Belgium. The company was a grouping of several ceramicists. Extracts of the catalog page (translation from original Dutch language): "And in May 1968, the N. V.* Belarti was founded, which enables further development of what can be best described, as a traditional production. Production is being increased, which does not change the fact that everything is still hand-made and that industrial counterfeiting is out of the question. To take up artistic expansion, the manufacture of all kinds of original objects in earthenware which started in 1962, was also used in 1969 by the n. v. Belarti. Slowly but surely, foreign buyers are also attracted by the originality and quality of the "Belarti creations," and the studio grows into a company of international size. The small oven from the pioneer days makes fully automatic equipment for a range of bulky ovens. Despite the rapid expansion and fame, we still have our first customers who remained loyal throughout the company's evolution and became true friends. It is wide thanks to them, with their knowledge of sales, that we are now able to present a renewed collection here in this catalog. N. V. J.
