Small 18th Century Serpentine Serving Table
About the Item
A Stunning 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Serving Table, Of Diminutive Proportions And Attractive Serpentine Form, Retaining Exceptional Rich Untouched Colour And Patina Throughout, Having Superbly Figured And Unusually Segmented Top With Central Inlaid Conch Shell Decoration, Over One Drawer And Two False Drawers With Replacement Old Brass Handles To Frieze, Inlaid Corner Spandrels And Square Tapered Legs Terminating On Spade Feet.
This is a really remarkable little 18th century georgian table. It is almost impossible to put into words just how beautiful it is, the table just exudes elegance, class and sophistication.
One of the rarest features is the top, which has been very deliberately designed using highly figured veneers, laid in segments designed to oppose and mirror each other, which is something we have rarely come across before but it certainly creates a highly decorative effect.
In combination with the superbly thought out top there is also crossbanded decoration and inlaid corner spandrels which all further enhance the piece. These features are then all tied together with the fact that the table has managed to maintain the most spectacular colour and patina throughout, it is extremely clear that it has never in its life been stripped and repolished, or even heavily cleaned. The surface, or skin as it is known in the trade, is exactly as one would wish to find on a genuine 18th century piece of furniture and good enough to grace absolutely any collection.
From a practical and functional perspective the table is also incredibly useful, especially for modern day homes. That is in no small part due to the relatively unusual size and proportion for a georgian serving table, in fact the proportions are more those for which we would normally refer a georgian pier table, or console table.
Clearly extremely well loved throughout the many years of its life there is very little to mention in terms of condition. We have already discussed how wonderfully untouched the surface is and there are a few minor old blemishes, or veneer repairs, but none of these can be seen without thorough inspection and certainly there is a relatively small amount when taking into account the age and function of the table.
As with all items which we offer for sale the table has received an inspection and natural wax polish in our workshops before being offered for sale, just to ensure that it is in its absolute best possible condition and ready for immediate placement within the home.

Although there has always been a large amount of discussion and conjecture as to the original purpose of antique miniature furniture it will be almost impossoble for a definitive answer to be given for by far the majority of surviving pieces.
The two well known and accepted purposes were either as an apprentice piece, meaning that the item may well have been made by a hopeful young man looking to secure himself a job at the local cabinet making workshop and using the piece as an audition for entry, or alternatively as a travelling salesmans sample piece where scale models of the full size items which a workshop could produce were created, allowing the salesman to take them away and use them for taking orders.
We believe that this wonderful little antique miniature chest...
