Rationalist Oval Dining Table in Oak, Holland, 1920s

About the Item

Oval dining table in oak, on juxtaposed oval legs, Dutch, 1920s Such a Minimalist and modern piece for it's time. Two elliptic shapes following a juxtaposed axis displays great knowledge of math, architecture and design. Truly an Avant Garde item. Certainly an inspiration for later Scandinavian Modern designers such as Axel Einar Hjorth The name Rationalism is retroactively applied to a movement in architecture that came about during the Age of Enlightenment (more specifically, Neoclassicism), arguing that architecture's intellectual base is primarily in science as opposed to reverence for and emulation of archaic traditions and beliefs. Rationalist architects, following the philosophy of René Descartes emphasized geometric forms and ideal proportions. [5]:81-84.
