Elm Wood Dinner Table The Netherlands By Sordile
About the Item
On the surface of this table blade rests a slice of grafted elm, once part of a tree that stood in a park in The Hague before it was felled in 2006. The trunk spent three years submerged in water in the Zaan before being sliced and left to air-dry.
In the center of this slice, one can discern the juncture where a young trunk was once severed, and another elm was grafted onto it. The disparate growth rates of the two varieties have given rise to a ring-shaped bulge encircling the trunk, visible on both sides of the embedded wood piece.
The natural contour of this slice is harmonized with elm wood sourced from the Flevopolder, resulting in a simple yet elegantly defined shape. The gracefully curved legs are crafted from various segments, seamlessly joined and discreetly covered to conceal any seams. Employing a computer-controlled milling machine, the disparate elements of this naturally formed puzzle were meticulously carved and fused into a single, cohesive piece.
