About the Item

This is a fabulous dining set comprising an antique Victorian mahogany rounded rectangular extending dining table, circa 1880 in date with a set of eight Victorian style admiralty back dining chairs dating from the late 20th century. The table has two original leaves and has been handcrafted from solid mahogany which has a beautiful grain and color. The two leaves can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion by a special winding mechanism and it sits on it's original brass castors which makes it easy to move when required. The set of eight hand-carved solid mahogany Admiralty back dining chairs compliment the table perfectly and comprises six side chairs and a pair of armchairs. This stunning set will stand out in your dining room and will definitely become a key piece in your furnishing collection. Condition: In excellent condition having been beautifully restored in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 78 x width 250 x depth 117 -table when fully extended. Height 78 x width 164 x depth 117 -with both leaves removed. Height 94 x width 62 x depth 57 -armchairs. Height 93 x width 51 x depth 54 -chairs. Dimensions in inches: Height 2 feet, 7 inches x width 8 feet, 2 inches x depth 3 feet, 10 inches -table when fully extended Height 2 feet, 7 inches x width 5 feet, 5 inches x depth 3 feet, 10 inches -with both leaves removed Height 3 feet, 1 inch x width 2 feet, 0 inches x depth 1 foot, 10 inches -armchairs Height 3 feet, 1 inch x width 1 foot, 8 inches x depth 1 foot, 9 inches -chairs Mahogany is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewelry box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress Mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as Rosewood, Kingwood, Burr Walnut and Coromandel, so that the actual Mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although Mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘Flame’ Mahogany and ‘Fiddleback’ Mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of Fine musical instruments). Cuban Mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850s, this particular variety became all but extinct. Winding Mechanism for extending tables A man by the name of Samuel Hawkins applied for a patent on a screw expander on June 6th, 1861. Presumably, Mr. Hawkins either died or retired because his business was taken over by a young machinist named Joseph Fitter in 1864. Joseph Fitter operated a machinist shop where he produced winding mechanisms for extending tables as well as screw expanders for piano stools and other applications at 210 Cheapside, Birmingham England by the name of Britannia Works.
