About the Item

Willem Penaat for Metz & Co, writing desk with office chair, stained oak, cognac brown leather, The Netherlands, 1925 Made in 1925, this wonderful desk with chair is designed by Willem Penaat for Metz & Co. When Penaat started collaborating with the producer, his designs were marked by fluid plastic forms. This plasticity finds its resonance in the creations of those designers affiliated with the Amsterdam School. In contrast with Penaat's approach, these artisans put more emphasize on the totality of the furniture's shape where construction played a secondary role. They employed conventional artisanal techniques and luxurious materials. Penaat, on the other hand, favored oak wood as his medium and integrated both construction and mechanical production. It is precisely due to this philosophy that the plastic elements can be found in places where they are easy to apply. In this pursuit of simplicity and economical usage, the emphasis remained on aesthetic appeal, with no compromise to functional utility. The transformation in the design of Penaat's furniture, transitioning from ornate plasticity to streamlined functionality, is in parallel with the shifts within the architectural realm. As the Amsterdam School's influence waned after 1925, functionalism gained more popularity. The architectural space held great important to Penaat while designing the pieces. Aligned with shifting notions of living, with higher demands on comfort, hygiene, and ease of upkeep, this table with chair is a perfect embodiment of this shift that is further marked by multifunctionality, and mobility. The sides are flanked with shelves for storage, allowing the user to use the desk in width and depth. The overall appearance of the set looks balanced due to the construction which rests on symmetrical proportions, the minimum use of colors and materials, and the implementation of simplified shapes.
