Mahogany Kidney Shaped 19th Century Writing Table

About the Item

A quite exceptional quality late 19th century mahogany kidney shaped writing table, having gilt tooled decoration to leather inset top, over one drawer to frieze, with superb marquetry inlaid decoration, raised on elegant square tapered legs with original brass castors. Makers/Retailers Stamp To Top Of Drawer - "Maple & Co." There is a stamp to the drawer of this beautiful little table to show that it was once a part of the inventory of the exceptional London firm Maple & Co, so its hardly surprising that it is such good quality if they were willing to offer it for sale. Maple & Co were one of the most well known furniture makers and retailers in both the United Kingdom and the Rest Of The World at the end of the 19th Century and they offered only the best of the best. As one would expect it is quite exceptional quality and boasts real elegance in both its form and design. The kidney shaped design is a popular one, both for its function and elegance. The timbers used, both primary and secondary are all of very high grade and this means that the table is still as fit for purpose as the day it was made. One of the greatest features of this little writing table is that one doesn't have to use it as a desk. It is small enough to be use as an occasional table, lamp table, side table or even bedside table should one wish. Of course it would also make a fabulous little writing desk for somebody who is only required to occasionally be perched at their desk and perhaps only has a small space to work from. As with all items which we offer for sale this writing table has been inspected by our highly skilled tradtional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. This has ensured it is ready to be placed immediately into use within the home or office. Circa 1890. Measures: Height 29.75in. Width 39in. Depth 23in. A delightful 19th century occasional lamp, or wine table, with well figured amboyna circular top and ormolu moulding raised on three elegant ebonized and inlaid turned supports, terminating with triform plateau and elegant sabre feet. Although victorian in date this table draws on a variety of different stylistic features, from a range of different periods. The use of beautiful amboyna veneers, set against ebonised mouldings is very much a 19th century feature however, the contrast created providing both a boldness and elegance all in one. This little occasional table is constructed from excellent timbers and when taking into account the overall quality of construction as well it is clear that it was produced in one of the top cabinet makers workshops of the time. Surprisingly sturdy for such a small article, which is due to the intelligent triple support design, this is a most practical table indeed, perfect for a wide variety of spots around the home, where one can use it to house a lamp, some photo frames or even a nice glass of wine. It is a great size and should fit elegantly into just about spot desired. Overall the condition is good and as with all items which we offer for sale it has received a natural wax polish by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture...
