English George III Mahogany & Leather Pedestal “Rent” Writing Desk ca. 1800
About the Item
GEORGE III MAHOGANY & TOOLED LEATHER PEDESTAL DESK WITH "RENT" COMPARTMENTS
England, ca. 1800 with numerous hidden compartments
Item # 311EFP30W
A rather special find, this positively gorgeous George III period writing desk features a wonderful series of alphabetized "rent" compartments in the upper drawer that make it a particularly interesting desk. This is accessed by withdrawing the upper drawer and pushing back the leather writing surface, which reveals generous storage in the center backed by tiny drawers with early labels on them noting "Insurance" and "Savings" in period script. On the right and left are the drawers, each with a large ovular satinwood plaque inlaid with ebony letters for organizing files and payments. The back compartments on the right and left feature a hidden drawer that is accessed by lifting out the compartment, then lifting out the divider and ultimately accessing a generous size hand-dovetailed drawer hidden away inside the recess. Additional hidden compartments are available beneath the inkwells on the right and left - these are accessed similarly, by lifting the divider between the inkwell and the first compartment to reveal a void beneath the inkwells.
A desk that was designed for active and practical use, it has become an object of beauty with a rich historical surface and brilliant patina throughout. The top is richly dressed with an olive-green gilt-tooled leather writing surface, the same being on the withdrawable top drawer though the hue differs since it has been largely protected from the sunlight.
Either pedestal is set with drawers, the right with full depth drawers and the left with half-depth drawers (to accomodate the shelves accessible from the back of the desk using the single door). The hardware is replaced with period correct stamped pulls, these appearing to have been placed on the desk well over a century ago.
This wonderfully worn desk is a treasure that shows its centuries of careful ownership throughout - it is a working piece that is at the same time exceedingly beautiful, meant to be actively utilized and enjoyed.
Measurements: 30 5/8" H x 27" D x 49 3/4" W; knee clearance is 24 1/2" H
Condition Report:
Extensive wear throughout, notably including shrinkage between the moldings and the desk that create some large gaps; the shrinkage has affected the right side door on te reverse which does not meet its lockplate any longer; shrinkage crack in the same door that has been filled with wax (a reversible touchup) and a loss at the top of the door also wax patched - a plate has been affixed to the reverse to tighten the crack; extensive finish loss and discoloration, including staining to the baseboard moldings; all hardware replaced, originally being wooden turned knobs that are replaced with period correct stamped brass pulls; no keys and all locks untested; the top drawer and the withdrawable leather writing surface operate "relatively" smoothly, though there is some order of operations in how it should be worked: after opening the drawer and after pushing back the leather writing surface to access the compartments below, the leather writing surface must be pulled back into place (covering the compartments) before pushing the entire drawer into the desk. If you push the leather writing surface in first, it can jam up the drawer and takes some effort to reorientate. Please review the detailed images for full condition - the desk has extensive surface history, but presents a beautiful aged aesthetic and remains fully functional - with some care, it will continue to serve for many lifetimes.

GEORGE III MAHOGANY ARCHITECT'S DESK IN MANNER OF GILLOWS OF LANCASTER
England, circa 1790 with alphabetized rent drawers interior unmarked
Item # 405KYH28Z
This remarkable architect's pedestal desk was almost certainly crafted by Gillows of Lancaster, London circa 1790. It features a rectangular top inlaid with maroon gilt-tooled leather bordered by a molded edge. Below this is situated a full-width frieze drawer which is decorated to appear as two false drawers over pedestals containing three graduated drawers on either side of an open kneehole. The desk stands on a molded plinth base fitted with casters.
The top drawer reveals a sliding gilt-tooled leather writing surface with a central panel that can be lifted on ratchet supports to hold and display documents. This surface slides back to uncover a lower compartment with an open storage area, flanked by three lidded compartments labeled alphabetically within oval reserves. The back of the desk is designed for a tidy appearance, making it suitable for placement in the center of a room, featuring two full-width faux drawers above faux cabinet doors in the pedestals.
While the present example is not marked by Gillows, it is almost without question a product of their workshops and is firmly attributed to their design books. The alphabet inlaid drawers were inspired by designs popularized by Thomas Shearer’s The Cabinet Maker’s London Book of Prices (1788-1803). These were employed in designs published by Gillows, such as the 'bureau writing-table' with a double-ratcheted top made for the Earl of Shrewsbury in 1789 and a writing-table from 1794 (see Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, L. Boynton, ed., 1995, pl. 24 and 41). A similar design appears in the firm’s 1798 Estimate Sketch Book (p.1481), preserved in the Westminster City Library. The drawer design is further seen on pedestal desks stamped by Gillows, including the library table provided by the firm in 1778 to Denton Hall (see C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol.II, p.246, pl.449).
Gillows produced many variations of this desk style, including those with ratcheting tops for standing use, enclosed kneehole designs, various types of pulls, and subtle dimensional adjustments. Examples can be seen well into the George IV period and the influence of this form on later desks by Gillows can be seen as the tastes changed into the second half of the nineteenth century.
Sir Walter Scott acquired a similar desk from Gillows for his Edinburgh house in Castle Street in 1810, later moving it to his study at Abbotsford in 1826. In a letter to J.B. Morritt of Rokeby Hall, Yorkshire, dated May 1810, Scott wrote: ‘You know I fell in love with your Library table and now the The Lady [The Lady of the Lake] has put crowns into my purse I would willingly treat myself unto the like...’ On 9 August, Scott wrote again to Morritt: 'I must not omit to tell you that Gillows table has arrived and gives great satisfaction. Everyone that sees it likes it so much I dare say I shall have some commissions to send him. His bill did not much exceed yours being about £30 ready money’. The Gillow archives from 1810 record: ‘pack for W.Scott Esq., Castle Street, Edinburgh, case containing mahogany bureau writing table Double Elevating tops cupboard in center complete writing drawers’. (See C. Wainwright, The Romantic Interior, Fig 162 & 163).

GEORGE III MAHOGANY DIMINUTIVE SECRETARY WITH BOOKCASE
England, circa 1780
Item # 307PZN13W
A very fine secretary desk of diminutive proportions, this fabulous form features an upper bookcase with a cove-molded cornice over a pair of glazed doors with eight panels each, these divided with original astragal moldings, opening to reveal an adjustable three-shelf space bookcase. The doors are beautifully embellished with fluted pilasters boasting Ionic capitals that are exquisitely detailed with rich undercutting.
The lower case features a brushing slide situated over five rows of graduated drawers, the second from the top cleverly fitted with a green baize writing surface that pushes back to reveal storage space beneath while the faceted glass inkwell bottles (one missing the lid) and double trough pen tray are situated along the right side.
The timbers selected for the case are above reproach and present with a ruby hue throughout that is incredibly appealing, this finished under a glowing silky French polish to the mahogany veneers throughout. The drawers are hung with period Georgian brasses...
