Exceptional quality ladies desk / writing table by Edwards & Roberts.
With antique desks and bookcases having always been the most sought after antique pieces of furniture, we were truly delighted to find this rare and top quality made ladies desk. This masterpiece of early 20th century furniture making is an absolute joy to own, use and to look at. All handcrafted by one of the greatest furniture makers, Edwards and Roberts from London, England, the sheer presence of this unique desk will instantly change the atmosphere of the room she is in. Nowadays most people would rather read, study or search for something online behind a desk, but we hope this one of a kind antique will go to a 'hopeful romantic' who still sits down and writes personal messages to loved ones. This Edwardian desk is a great example of the finest workmanship around the turn of the century and we were not surprised to find a maker's name when we first saw it. On the inside of the large, middle drawer (right next to the perfect working brass lock) is the name of Edwards and Roberts (see image 11).
This highly stylish and top class desk stands as firm as the day she was made and that is because all four legs are still firm and strong, as are all four original and stunningly patinated brass and bronze casters. This work of beauty has the most amazing marquetry inlay in almost all parts and not a single piece of inlay is missing. And with this desk being at least 105 years old that alone tells you something about the quality of Edwards and Roberts furniture. But it does not stop there. All the stunning brass handles too are still there and all are in excellent condition as well. All handles also come with very small patent marks in them (as do all the locks, the original key and even all the brass hinges of this exceptional desk). With the original key all three drawers below desk top can be closed. The desk top, by the way, is inlaid with perfect condition leather in green with golden decoration on the sides. And it does not stop there either, because also the inside of all drawers are superb as well. Not only are they as clean and as handsome as one could hope for, there also are some really useful compartments. We especially love the interior below the hinged lid in the top right of this desk. In there are several compartments for letters/cards, but also a secret compartment below the 'pen box' (as shown in images 6 and 7). Both the materials and the workmanship are simply awesome. Thanks to the natural aging of the top quality woodtypes, this practical ladies desk has also grown a wonderful patina. A piece like this will always lift your spirit and we are certain it will help toward making your house your home.
