About the Item

A rectangular painted cast iron table resembling bamboo from France c.1900 with the marble top. This table was originally used in the orangerie (the winter glass house used to shelter tropical plants) of an estate near Montpelier, France. Please take a look at the distinctive base that is actually iron that has been cast to mimic the appearance of bamboo. These legs were actually a proprietary design made to be mass produced and then packed flat to be shipped around the world where it would then be assembled. Each leg has a stamp in the cast iron that says "REGISTERED NO. 1028620" that identified it as a item that could only be made by one company. Beginning in the 1870's there was a virtually limitless demand for furniture made from true bamboo timber for use in glass houses as well as interiors that was most powerful in France and England. It soon became apparent that only the lightest pieces could be made of bamboo as it is not a load bearing material. At first, timber was carved and finished to look like bamboo but the cast iron industry had become adept at constructing moulds that could repeat the same design over and over while ensuring that high quality was always maintained. This tables is special in that after it was assembled an artisan was engaged to add a painted finish to the iron that furthered the resemblance to true bamboo. Whether seen from a distance or close up the appearance of this table is enchanting. The curve of each leg as well as the rings seen in growing bamboo have all been replicated in the cast iron and then enhanced with the painted finish. The table retains the dark green rectangular marble top that was added to bring the depth and beauty of living plants to the table surface as well as providing a surface that was resistant to wear. We also have the matching pair of circular cast iron bamboo tables from the same estate and it is tremendously unusual to have the complete set (please see our stock number EEJ372A).
