Rare Large 1940s Console by Paolo Buffa in Oak and Green Alpi Marble

About the Item

A rare and elegant console table designed by Paolo Buffa in the 1940s, showcasing his unmistakable design language and exceptional Italian craftsmanship. This piece features a stunning Green Alpi marble top, which, with its natural imperfections, narrates the history of the object while enhancing its authentic charm. The architectural structure of the console is particularly striking, with four geometrically arranged legs—two centrally positioned and two lateral—creating a perfect balance between strength and grace. The legs are joined by curved wooden crossbars, into which the same brass floral motif is inlaid, a signature detail found in Buffa’s works. The brass-capped feet further highlight his exquisite attention to detail, while the French Empire-style leg design is a recurring element in Buffa’s early creations, adding a timeless neoclassical touch. A distinctive oval motif in light wood veneer adorns the upper wooden structure, an unmistakable hallmark of Paolo Buffa’s refined aesthetic. This particular model is a rare variation, making it even more collectible. One of the most extraordinary design details of this console is its front drawer, seamlessly integrated into the structure. The drawer opens by sliding a hand under a finely crafted recessed groove, an ingenious and sophisticated solution that exemplifies Buffa’s mastery of functional yet elegant design, especially for its time. The brass elements have been deliberately left with their natural patina, adding depth and authenticity to the piece. Similarly, the wood has been left in its original condition, though upon request, a full wood polishing treatment can be provided, included in the price before shipping. Additionally, minor imperfections in the marble top can be professionally filled and polished if desired. However, we have chosen to preserve the console in its original patina, as we find its timeworn beauty absolutely captivating. With an impressive width of 146 cm, this console is not only a masterpiece of design but also a statement piece, blending historic elegance with a surprisingly contemporary presence—ideal for refined interiors.
