Large Henredon Georgian Style Mahogany Flip-Top Gateleg Console Table

About the Item

A handsome vintage high-quality carved mahogany flip-top console in classic and refined English Georgian taste by fine quality American furniture maker Henredon, with interesting provenance. From the exquisite Noix collection, this large versatile six legged table morphs from a narrow console doubling in size to a card games table, also perfect proportions for use as a buffet server or opening to easily add additional dining seating when entertaining or large family gatherings. High quality hand-crafted solid wood construction, exceptionally executed in sophisticated and restrained traditional 18th century English Georgian style (similar to Neoclassical inspired French Louis XVI & American Federal), having a long rectangular antiqued parquetry boarded tabletop with custom glass panel top, hinged two-board flip-top extension, supported by a pair of wooden hinge swing-out gate-legs, having a shaped apron with fluted frieze and elegant shell carvings, raised on six tapering squared straight legs, terminating in subtle acanthus carved feet. Late 20th century, United States Signed, retaining the original order label to underside. PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION: From the magnificent Private collection of Floyd and Beverly Sherman. ABOUT THE MAKER: Henredon Furniture was founded in Morganton, North Carolina, in 1945 by four entrepreneurs. They are Henry Wilson, Ralph Edwards, Donnell VanOppen, and John Harris. The four men had previously worked together at a furniture company called Lenoir Chair Company, which had gone bankrupt during the Great Depression. The company’s name, “Henredon,” combines the founders’ first names. With a combined $10,000 in capital, the founders set out to create a furniture company focusing on quality craftsmanship and innovative design. They began by producing only three furniture pieces – a chair, a stool, and a bench – which they sold to local furniture retailers. In the early years, Henredon’s success was based on its ability to produce high-quality furniture at a reasonable cost. The company used innovative manufacturing techniques and materials, such as new types of glues and finishes, to create furniture that was both durable and beautiful. As the company grew, its product line expanded to include a wide range of furniture, including kitchen breakfast tables, dining tables, consoles, sofas, and bedroom sets. Henredon’s furniture coincides with timeless design, quality craftsmanship, and attention to detail. In the 1950s and 1960s, Henredon gained a reputation for producing some of the finest furniture in the United States. The company’s furniture was often featured in high-end interior design magazines. Henredon was also used in many upscale homes and hotels. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Henredon continued to expand its product line and build a strong reputation in the furniture industry. The company introduced new collections designed by notable designers, such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Dorothy Draper. Heritage Home Group acquired Henredon in 1986. Under the ownership of Heritage Home Group, Henredon continued to produce high-end furniture with a focus on quality craftsmanship and timeless design. In 2018, Heritage Home Group and the company’s assets, including Henredon were aquired by Furniture Brands International. Henredon is also well known for collaborations with some of the most important and prominent designers, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Dorothy Draper, Alexa Hampton and Polo's Ralph Lauren. These collaborations have resulted in some of the company’s most iconic furniture collections, which are still popular and highly sought after today CONDITION: High-quality craftsmanship and construction. Dimensions: (approx) 31" High, 49" Wide, 24.75" Deep (each) Phyllis Morris was one of the design industry’s first multitaskers. She wore many hats: furniture designer, businesswoman, civic leader, legendary hostess, humanitarian, wife and mother. Phyllis Morris is known for them all, but mostly that last one. The legendary interior designer of the 1950s and ’60s wrote her own rules and lived a life as large and colorful as the designs she favored. Morris began her design career in 1953 in Los Angeles, California by creating the "Poodle Lamp," a sculpture of her own poodle topped with a little flared shade. Dubbed “The Marilyn Monroe of the furniture industry” — she took charge of her destiny with her famous poodle lamp. After sculpting the original, based on her own pink-dyed pup, Morris left it on consignment in a Beverly Hills shop. She had friends place orders for it; the shop asked for a dozen models, and Morris was in business. “I knew I was not a homemaker,” she said. What transformed Morris from lamp designer to “designer to the stars” may have been her instinct for publicity. She reportedly delivered two of the lamps to Liberace, her first big-name customer, in a pink Cadillac convertible, while wearing a mink cape. Morris was a pro at offering provocative quips or outrageous photo-ops, which often made headlines around the globe. “My mom was a marketing genius,” says Morris’ daughter Jamie Adler, who now runs the brand and reintroduced the poodle lamp for Currey & Company last year. “She understood branding and how to get press. She was so brave and fearless as a woman in a male-dominated industry.” At a time when most women stayed home, Morris was a furniture designer, businesswoman, civic leader, legendary hostess, humanitarian, wife and mother. “She was multitasking long before the word was invented,” Adler says. With her colorful and eclectic interiors and over-the-top furnishings, Morris turned the interior design world upside-down, and celebrities came calling. She designed hotel suites frequented by Frank Sinatra, Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Elvis. Her opulent canopied beds became a status symbol for the likes of Cher and Sonny Bono, the Who’s Keith Moon, Gladys Knight and Jerry Vale, according to a 1978 People magazine story. A typical Morris room setting during the mid-1960s would find Pop art accessories...
