Danish Cabinetmaker Rectangular Exotic Wood Coffee Table, Denmark, 1960s
About the Item
Danish furniture design possesses a homely tone in nature and character. The best works are characterized by the will to produce genuine, technical workmanship, a sound critical attitude to untimely modernism. There is also a natural desire to take up the problems for renewed investigation and solutions in accordance to the exigencies of the times.
Thanks to these characteristics and attitudes, Danish pieces like this coffee table have an outstanding balance with a classic, timeless design. With a clear statement of simplicity, quality and respect for materials, this table is a great example of Danish Modern design. The rectangular tabletop is made of exotic wood, yet it has a light impression. The large surface shows off the pattern of the wood, including diverse swirls and a large colour variety ranging from light to dark brown. Countering the restrained shape of the top, the legs, and feet have an intricate structure with gently rounded edges. The feet are connected thus the look resembles the sledge style. The standout feature however, is the pair of brass braces; this diagonal reinforcement is not only an important structural feature, it is also a visually appealing detail that gives character to this coffee table. Looking beneath the top, the elaborate wooden structure becomes visible, showing the cabinetmaker’s expert skill and knowledge.
The combination of the beautiful exotic wood and the brass creates the modern look that Danish Mid-Century design is coveted for. The quality of the execution leaves no questions behind, making this table a stylish and timeless piece ideal for any interior.

Mid-Century Danish Cabinetmaker Sideboard, Denmark, 1960s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Many associate Danish furniture with the country's golden age, the mid-20th century. This model shows why: its design follows in the vein of Scandinavian functionality, timelessness and quality. It has a classic look, recalling the designs created for H.P. Hansen by Arne Vodder, where functionality was met with the highest quality and materials.
The wooden veneer has a grain that has come out beautifully over time, and gives the sideboard its defining, striking look. The wide surfaces and the strict rectangular look are perfect to showcase the patterns. The four sliding doors reveal the versatile shelving and storage system...

Carl Malmsten "Samsas" Coffee Table for Åfors Möbelfabrik AB, Sweden, 1960s
By Carl Malmsten
Located in Utrecht, NL
“All edges must be thoroughly broken”, Carl Malmsten often wrote in his drawings. It was nature that was his great source of inspiration and in nature there are hardly any sharp edges or corners. This “Samsas” table is one of the greatest examples of this sentiment.
This elegant table was designed as part of the 'Samsas' series of seating models and this rare table. Neither the light, the eye nor the person likes to turn against sharp corners, Malmsten explained once. Therefore, edges should be rounded so that they become friendlier to touch and look at. Carl Malmsten was not only one of Sweden's most famous furniture designers, he was also one of the last century's great cultural personalities with a strong influence on the home environment, public environment and the contemporary public debate. His personality shines through the design of this round coffee table as well. The design is dominated by the round tabletop with a spectacular sunburst pattern. The sunburst design or figure was commonly used in architectural ornaments and design patterns; it consists of rays or "beams" radiating out from a central point in the manner of sunbeams. To support the top are four straight legs with impeccable joinery that is visible under the tabletop. Since this table was made in the heyday of the mid-century, the legs, and the design as a whole lacks heavy ornamentation and instead focuses on the natural beauty of wood and the rounded edges.
Carl Malmsten’s design was materialized by Swedish manufacturer, Åfors Möbelfabrik AB...
