Cloutier Brothers Red enameled Lava Tile Coffee Table
About the Item
Rare red enameled lava tile low table by Robert and Jean Cloutier dating from the 1950s. This mid-century Lava Tile Coffee Table by the Cloutier Brothers is truly a one-of-a-kind piece.
Beautifully crafted from a black metal base, the rectangular table features a red and amber surface in an abstract design, lending a unique and striking edge to the piece.
This coffee table by the twin design duo can be converted into artwork to be hung on the wall, as the legs can be removed.
After their training at the Ceramic School of Meaux, where they also learned the technique of stucco, they were apprentices in the workshops of confirmed Parisian ceramists: at Lafourcade, at Georges Jouve for Robert, Michel Rivière for Jean; then they are hired by Pol Chambost.
In 1956, they developed a red enamel which would have international success, then around 1960 new cooking methods. In 1964, Haviland asked them to create exclusive models. They collaborate on interior decoration projects with certain architects: design of spaces at the Galeries Lafayette in Paris in 1965, a dividing wall for Air France, commissioning for Mitsukoshi from 1967.
