About the Item

Ceramic coffee table "Navettes" by the French ceramist artist Roger Capron, based in Vallauris ( south of France ). This table has the Navettes in red, orange, black and white in a black iron frame. Signed " R. Capron "on the bottom left corner of the board. Date of creation: around 1960. Excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. French ceramist Roger Capron was born in Vincennes in 1922. He studied at the School of Applied Arts in Paris where he graduated in 1943 and worked for a time as a teacher. In 1946, Roger Capron moved to Vallauris in the south of France and founded the ceramic workshop “Atelier Callis” with ceramists Robert Picault (1919-2000) and Jean Derval (1925-2010). Located along the Côte d'Azur, the town of Vallauris is renowned for its production of pottery dating back to Roman times. During the post-war period, the city experienced a renaissance of this craft, as many artists (such as Picasso) arrived here to work with old materials and techniques. Atelier Callis begins to produce small objects for the home, deliberately modest and designed for everyday use. The wind of popularity blowing over French ceramics at this time gave Roger Capron the opportunity to expand his business. In 1952, he separated from Robert Picault and Jean Derval and opened his own small factory, Atelier Capron, which employed around fifty workers. A few years later, Roger Capron's reputation was established internationally and his pieces could be found on the shelves of department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Gimbels. In 1980, his factory employed around 120 people and specialized in tiled coffee tables, which made Roger Capron famous today. Its success attracted imitators and in 1982 the factory had to close due to the competitiveness of mass and cheap tile producers. Like Picasso, Roger Capron's design aesthetic was constantly evolving, as he worked in different styles from the 1950s. by undulating lines and expressionist motifs. From the 1960s, it evolved into a more controlled, modernist style, with glossy varnishes and showy geometric patterns. But over time, the work of Roger Capron, which extends from coffee and side tables to decanters and vases, is considered cliché in France and falls into oblivion. However, today his pieces are once again highly esteemed by collectors around the world. Roger Capron has received numerous awards during his career including the gold medal at the Milan Triennale and Expo '58 in Brussels. In 2000, The New York Times wrote that Capron was "one of the most prolific and important artisans of post-war European design". He died in 2006.

Roger Capron is best known for his geometrically complex, vibrantly colored tile-topped coffee tables. These mid-century furnishings, with their comely palettes and playful arrangements of abstract forms or natural-world motifs, are approachable yet sophisticated. They draw on Scandinavian modernism and exemplify the Parisian ceramist’s belief in ensuring that things of beauty are easily and widely accessible, a principle espoused by French decorative artist and designer René Gabriel.

Capron graduated in 1943 from the School of Applied Arts in Paris. In a small atelier he later founded with Robert Picault and Jean Derval in Vallauris, Capron made alluring sculptures, table lamps and other objects and found inspiration in the work of Pablo Picasso, who had also opened an atelier in the region. He parted ways with his fellow ceramists in 1952 in order to open his own manufactory, Atelier Capron.

Initially staffed by a handful of workers, Atelier Capron captured international attention. His pieces were sold in stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Gimbels. Later, Capron’s wife, Jacotte, studied art and became a valued collaborator. Owing in part to her expertise in mixing pigments and glazes, Capron’s best-known ceramics feature dazzling colors and whimsical characters. Like Picasso, he experimented with many artistic styles and never settled on one technique for too long. His coffee tables, side tables and decorative objects are among the most enduring and coveted designs of the mid-century modern era.

While Capron’s factory had grown tenfold by 1980, it shut down a few years later after a slew of competitors began mass-producing cheaper imitations.

Capron won an award at the Milan Triennial in 1954 and International Grand Prize for Ceramics in 1970. His works have been displayed in the Musée National de la Céramique and the Musée Magnelli.

Exceptional light coffee table by the architect André Kulesza, hammered wrought iron and polychrome stained glass crystals. The fragments of glass crystals have been carefully selected and combined harmoniously to represent an abstract design. The glass crystals are fixed on reinforced glass and protected by a window which acts as a table top. the base is reminiscent of a spider, the 4 feet merge in the center and under the glass crystals to support the light diffuser. Incredible work of art. The architect André Kulesza (1913 - 2012) known as the Polish Le Corbusier, carried out this unique production in parallel with the construction of the Polish church in Lens (city in the north of France) of which he was the architect, to commemorate the thousand years of Christianity in Poland.
