Art Deco French Tea/Coffee Table With Octagonal Top

About the Item

We kindly invite you to read the full description, as we strive to provide detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our pieces. This elegant and refined French Art Deco table is crafted from walnut and features an octagonal top supported by four wide, rectangular-section legs. These legs curve at the bottom to hold a smaller square shelf. At the base, four square wooden elements, painted black, create an aesthetically pleasing contrast. The entire structure stands out for its exceptional solidity, stability, and durability. This table was handcrafted between 1930 and 1935 by a master artisan in a prestigious woodworking workshop in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, a French town in the Isère department, renowned as the "City of Furniture" due to its long-standing tradition of fine woodworking. The entire piece is veneered with flamed European walnut (Juglans regia), one of the most prized and sought-after woods in luxury furniture making. Flamed walnut is characterized by its intricate, interwoven wood fibers, which enhance its strength and density while also giving it a uniquely elegant aesthetic. Thanks to its naturally varied grain patterns, this wood exudes refinement and sophistication. The two tabletops, though crafted from the same wood, display distinct grain patterns, making each piece truly one of a kind. Veneering is an ancient technique that involves applying thin layers of fine wood to a high-quality support base. The walnut used for this process is sourced from trees specifically cultivated for this purpose, then sliced into thin sheets ranging from 1 to 2 millimeters thick. The base wood is treated with a special adhesive, onto which the fine walnut sheets are manually applied with precision. Once the veneer is affixed, it is pressed and left to dry, ensuring a strong and stable bond between the top-quality walnut and its support. After drying, the surface is refined through sanding, polishing, and protective finishes such as varnishes or oils to enhance its appearance and durability. The history of veneering dates back centuries, with its first recorded use believed to be in ancient Egypt and China. Over time, this technique spread worldwide, evolving into a fundamental element in the production of high-end furniture, luxury décor, and fine art objects. Applied to this table, veneering enhances the rich tones, flamed patterns, and natural wood grain, bringing out its inherent beauty. The artisans who crafted this table succeeded in creating an extraordinary and captivating piece, both functional and rich in heritage, evoking the craftsmanship and elegance of a bygone era.
