Circa 1870 French Walnut Wood Center Table with Rams' Heads and Fleur De Lys

About the Item

This unusual and interesting center table was produced in France, during the middle of the latter half of the 19th century. It was during this time that French furniture makers, designers, carvers, and carpenters were able to freely re-imagine and re-interpret the various styles of the preceding centuries. We can see influences of the Louis XIV, Regence and LXV periods in the rams heads, cabriole legs, hoof feet, and mascarons. The table was constructed with rich and beautiful walnut, and it has retained an exceptional patina for a 19th century piece. All 4 sides are shaped, carved, and decorated with a mix of moldings, rams’ heads, fleur de lys, and mascarons, while the shaped acanthus decorated legs terminate in hoof feet. A layer of French wax has been applied, and after a careful polishing, the depth of the patina and beauty of the graining has come to life. Today, this interesting French table would make for a wonderful center table or writing table.

The intricate hand-carved base exhibits aspects of the Rococo style: highly ornamental with asymmetrical carvings, scrolling curves and gilding. Although the wood has since been stripped, the table has a few faint traces of gold remaining in places. The white gesso/paint has been partially left throughout the table base and then glazed over to produce a beautiful and unique finish. This table can also be described as a Louis XIV “table à gibier...
