1980s Ettore Sottsass Attributed Round Carrara Marble Dining Table, Italy
About the Item
White Carrara marble top and base Ettore Sottsass attributed pedestal dining table. Beautiful and whimsical, this piece exemplifies the Memphis Milano esthetic created by Ettore Sottsass. What would go on to represent one of the most collectable movements that defined the Postmodern era.
Proportion, material, contrast, whimsical, beautiful, elegant. This table is a masterpiece that will endure timelessly.
Highest grade Italian materials and craftsmanship. The round table top with pencil round edge measures 1 inch thick and c.40 inches in diameter. It is constructed from white marble of the Carrara, Tuscany mine, demonstrated by its characteristic moderate blue-grey veins. The table top is supported by a cylindrical steel column, in satin black paint. The base of the pedestal column is supported by a single slab of matching white Carrara marble that has been carved with concentric rings of 1 inch thick buttressing out towards the floor.
Provenance: sourced from an exceptionally well appointed estate in Milan, Italy, that housed a very valuable collection of rare Postmodern art and design items.
Condition: the table top has been professionally re-polished. No stains, scratches or chips. The paintwork is without defect. The buttress has one or two minor and purely cosmetic chips that are not visible with normal use of this table or in normal lighting conditions. See the photograph. To photograph this, we removed the table top and used high powered flash photography.
