Early Georgian Mahogany Tea Table

About the Item

A very good quality, early 18th century, George II Period Mahogany Demi Lune tea table, of exceptional untouched colour and patina throughout, having well figured foldover top, enclosing storage well, raised on elegant cabriole legs with carved lappet details to top and turned pad feet below. As the name suggests, tea tables were originally made f0r serving tea. Quite often one of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from. Aside from their original purpose however tea tables suit a whole variety of different spaces around the home. They are generally pretty elegant in their design and not overpoweringly large, therefore more often than not they can be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table. This particular tea table is a great example of its type. It is constructed from dense, righ, well figured mahogany timber, probably the best and therefore most expensive that was available at the time. Throughout the near 300 years of its life this mahogany timber has obtained the most magnificent, untouched colour and patina to the surface and this is a real standout feature, setting the table apart from so many others which we have seen recently. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers have inspected it and given it a natural wax polish, ensuring that it is ready to be placed straight into the home. circa 1730. As suggested by the name, tea tables were made to serve tea from. Often part of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from. Now of course aside from its original purpose this table suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table. Constructed from well figured, high grade mahogany which would have been expensive to purchase in the late 18th century it is incredibly elegant and very good quality. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the overall look of the table and the cabinet making has been well executed. The legs are quite spectacular, a design which we have actually never come across before. They are certainly something very special and, dare we say it, possibly even a unique feature, which will no doubt be a talking point once the table is standing proudly in position. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture...
