Early Oak Folding Grocery / Shopping Cart

About the Item

Charming oak collapsible shopping cart on caster wheels (ca. late 1930s/early 1940s, USA). This early version, inspired by a folding chair, was developed by Sylvan Goldman in 1936 as a solution to the cumbersome shopping basket. It not only took up little room when collapsed and stacked, but also accommodated two baskets in two holders on the frame - one above and one below, allowing shoppers to buy more without struggling with carrying a heavy basket. In a modern context, the uses are unlimited - this cart can be used for holding artist's supplies/palettes, as a bar/tea/snack table, or a bathroom caddy with the addition of small trays. Very good, vintage condition with wear/paint losses consistent with age and use. Remains a visually appealing work of folk art that is structurally sound and usable. Measures: H: 36.13" x L: 24" x D: 16.38" Collapsed: H: 43.13" x L: 18.5" x D: 9.5" The top surface vacant space for a tray measures: L: 16.63" x D: 12.63" The bottom surface vacant space for a tray measures: L: 17.88" x D: 10.5" The height between tiers is 17"
