Pair of Austrian Biedermeier Wardrobes, Cabinets, Walnut, circa 1835

About the Item

Rare pair - two identical Biedermeier cabinets Austria Walnut Biedermeier around 1835 Dimensions: H x W x D: 177 x 111 x 54 cm Description: Extremely rare pair of two matching Biedermeier cabinets. Two-door cabinets with discreetly curved fronts standing on plinth square feet. The above measurement of 54 cm depth refers to the apex of the curve, while the full depth is 48 cm. We see continuous walnut grain patterns on the front and sides. Typical of the time and region, the pilaster strips and the moulding are slightly rounded and cross-veneered. The brass key plates show well-filled fruit baskets, flower, leaf and tassel ornaments. Discreetly emphasised by an ebonised moulding, the cornice protrudes slightly above the body. The doors are locked with bar locks. Inside, there are four shelves or one shelf and a clothes rail. We are happy to customise the interior design according to your individual requirements. Worth knowing: Furniture pairs reflect in a special way the idea of a perfect Biedermeier living environment. It was not only the furniture itself that was designed for symmetry, but also the rooms in which it was placed. Pieces of furniture were placed to the left and right of a window or on opposite walls, matching each other. The grain pattern of the two cabinets on offer here does not match exactly, but is nevertheless very harmonious. It is possible that the cabinets were not made at the same time, but a few years apart. At the time, purchasing a piece of furniture was a costly affair, as the material was expensive and the production, especially with the curved fronts, was time-consuming. Today, pairs like this one are very rare to find, as they were often separated by inheritance, spatial changes or the turmoil of war. Condition: Refurbished condition with a shellac hand polish. There is a larger old veneer addition on the left-hand side of one of the cabinets, which can be clearly seen in one of the photos.
